Description
Mercury (I) chloride is a dense white powder and insoluble in water and may be light sensitive. It is incompatible with strong bases, carbonates, sulphides, cyanides, alkalis, sulphites, sulphates, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, iodine, and hydrogen bromide. Mercurous chloride forms tetrahedral white crystals, and, unlike the mercuric salt, is only very slightly soluble in water (about 2mg/L water at 20°C). White, rhombic crystals or crystalline powder; odorless. Stable in air but darkens on
Mercurous chloride is an odorless white solid. Sinks in water. (USCG, 1999)|Liquid|WHITE CRYSTALLINE POWDER.
Mercurous chloride is an odorless white solid. Sinks in water. (USCG, 1999)|Dimercury dichloride is a mercury coordination entity.

Excerpt from ERG Guide 151 [Substances - Toxic (Non-combustible)]: SMALL FIRE: Dry chemical, CO2 or water spray. LARGE FIRE: Water spray, fog or regular foam. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Dike fire-control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material. Use water spray or fog; do not use straight streams. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Do not get water inside containers. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. (ERG, 2016)|In case of fire in the surroundings, use appropriate extinguishing media.
Excerpt from ERG Guide 151 [Substances - Toxic (Non-combustible)]: As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters (75 feet) for solids. SPILL: Increase, in the downwind direction, as necessary, the isolation distance shown above. FIRE: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLATE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions. (ERG, 2016)
Excerpt from ERG Guide 151 [Substances - Toxic (Non-combustible)]: Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. Cover with plastic sheet to prevent spreading. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. DO NOT GET WATER INSIDE CONTAINERS. (ERG, 2016)
Dust mask; goggles or face shield; protective gloves (USCG, 1999)
Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into covered containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.
Separated from food and feedstuffs. Keep in the dark. Store in an area without drain or sewer access. Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing.
Evaporation at 20 °C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed.
The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and kidneys. This may result in ataxia, sensory and memory disturbances, fatigue, muscle weakness and kidney impairment.
STRICT HYGIENE!
Use local exhaust or breathing protection.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Wear safety goggles.
Drug Information
Acute poisoning can result from inhaling dust concentrations of 1.2-8.5 mg/m 3 in air; symptoms include pain and tightness in chest, coughing, and difficulty in breathing. Compound is an irritant, cathartic, or purgat ive; rarely, ``calomel sickness,'' a benign reaction with fever and rash, appears after about 1 week; seldom causes systemic poisoning but may be fatal if retained to 30-40 mg/kg. Contact with eyes causes mild irritation. (USCG, 1999)
INHALATION: remove to fresh air; give artificial respiration if breathing has stopped. INGESTION: give egg whites, milk, or activated charcoal; induce vomiting; consult physician. EYES: flush with water. SKIN: wash with soap and water. (USCG, 1999)
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention .
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.

The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.
Cough. Sore throat.
