Description

This inorganic compound is a white crystalline solid with the molecular formula Mg(ClO₃)₂. It is highly soluble in water and acts as a strong oxidizer. It should be stored away from combustible materials and reducing agents.

MAGNESIUM CHLORATE is a powerful oxidizer. Explosive reaction with copper(I) sulfide. Incandescent reaction with antimony(III) sulfide, arsenic(III) sulfide, tin(II) sulfide, tin(IV) sulfide. Incompatible with Al, As, C, Cu, MnO2, organic matter, organic acids, P and S. [Lewis, 3rd Ed . 786] . Mixtures with ammonium salts, with powdered metals, silicon, sulfur, or sulfides are readily ignited and potentially explosive [Bretherick 1979. p. 806]. A combination of finely divided aluminum and magnesium chlorate can explode by heat, percussion, or friction [Mellor 2:310. 1946-47].

Excerpt from ERG Guide 140 [Oxidizers]: SMALL FIRE: Use water. Do not use dry chemicals or foams. CO2 or Halon® may provide limited control. LARGE FIRE: Flood fire area with water from a distance. Do not move cargo or vehicle if cargo has been exposed to heat. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. (ERG, 2016)

LARGE SPILL: Consider initial downwind evacuation for at least 100 meters (330 feet). FIRE: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLATE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions. Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Do not get water inside containers. SMALL DRY SPILL: With clean shovel, place material into clean, dry container and cover loosely; move containers from spill area. SMALL LIQUID SPILL: Use a non-combustible material like vermiculite or sand to soak up the product and place into a container for later disposal. LARGE SPILL: Dike far ahead of liquid spill for later disposal. Following product recovery, flush area with water. (ERG, 2016)

Excerpt from ERG Guide 140 [Oxidizers]: Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves. Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. Contaminated clothing may be a fire risk when dry. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Keep victim calm and warm. Methods of Manufacturing

In the double decomposition method, the saturated solution of sodium chlorate is added to the regulator, preheated to 60-70°C, barium chloride is added to remove the chromate in the solution, and then sent to the reactor, and halogen block is added for the metathesis reaction. Then add a saturated solution of barium chloride and potassium permanganate to remove the sulfate and ferrous salt carried by the halogen block, filter out the precipitate, and evaporate the filtrate to 116-123°C, and a large amount of sodium chloride will precipitate, immediately Filter it while it is hot, and send the filtrate to a crystallizer to separate unreacted sodium chlorate at about 35°C. The magnesium chlorate refined liquid is evaporated and concentrated at 140-145 DEG C and then cooled to obtain a finished product of magnesium chlorate. 2NaC1O3+MgC12·6H2O→Mg(C1O3)2·6H2O+2NaCl

Used as defoliant before cotton harvest, wheat ripening agent, herbicide, desiccant. Also used as medicine.
