Thulium oxide (Tm2O3) Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The mixed rare earth obtained by decomposing the brown yttrium niobium ore contains 50% of Y2O3 and about 4% of CeO2. It is fed with rare earth nitrate solution after cerium removal. N263-LiNO is used to extract and group the system to obtain yttrium-rich rare earth. N263-heavy solvent-NH4SCN system extracts and purifies yttrium, the raffinate is yttrium-rich rare earth, other heavy rare earth thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium enter the organic phase, and then through thulium lutetium group extraction, back extraction, so that thulium and ytterbium enter the water phase, Thulium oxide is prepared by oxalic acid precipitation separation, filtration and burning. Its Tm2(C2O4)3→Tm2O3+3CO2+3CO

Uses

Thulium Oxide, also called Thulia, is the important dopant for silica-based fibre amplifiers, and also have specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, lasers. Because the wavelength of Thulium-based lasers is very efficient for superficial ablation of tissue, with minimal coagulation depth in air or in water. This makes Thulium lasers attractive for laser-based surgery.
