N-Ethyl-1-heptanamine Use and Manufacturing

A solution of n-heptylamine (10.31 g, 89.4 mmol) in 100 mL CH2CI2 was cooled in an ice bath. Pyridine (7.5 mL, 92.7 mmol) was added. Acetyl chloride (8.0 mL, 11 mmol) was gradually added over the course of 2 min. The ice bath was removed and the solution was allowed to warm to room temperature. After 1 h, water (100 mL) was added, and the organic layer was separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with 100 mL CH2C12. The combined organic extracts were washed with 10percent aqueous HCl solution, saturated NaHC03 solution and then saturated NaCI solution. The solution was dried over MgS04 and evaporated to give n-heptyl acetamide as a colorless liquid (13.73 g, 98percent yield. A solution of n-heptyl acetamide (6.076 g, 38.63 mmol) in 6 mL of diethyl ether was added dropwise to a suspension on LiAlH4 (4.60 g, 0.121 mol) in 150 mL diethyl ether. The suspension was refluxed for 8 h, cooled in ice and quenched with 4 mL H20, 4 mL of 2M NaOH and 12 mL of H20. The resulting suspension was filtered and the filtrate dried over Na2SO4. Evaporation of solvent gave (n-C7H, 5) N (H) C2H5 as a colorless liquid (5.29 g, 95percent yield).
