Colourless liquid 4-Ethylmorpholine is a colorless liquid with an ammonia-like odor.A colorless liquid with a strong ammonia-like odor. Severely irritates skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. According to a suggested classification scheme(2), this estimated Koc value suggests that N-ethylmorpholine has very high soil mobility(SRC). Insufficient data are available to predict the relative importance or rate of biodegradation in soil(SRC). Volatilization of N-ethylmorpholine is expected from dry soils(SRC) based on an experimental vapor pressure of 5 mm Hg(3,SRC), but not important from moist soils(SRC) based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.74X10-8 atm-cu m/mole(4,SRC).|AQUATIC FATE: Based on a suggested classification scheme(2), N-Ethylmorpholine will be essentially non-volatile from water(SRC) based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.74X10-8 atm-cu m/mol(1,SRC). ...ABSORBED THROUGH UNBROKEN SKIN.
Exposure can cause irritation of eyes, nose and throat. Contact with eyes may result in foggy vision and seeing halos around lights. (USCG, 1999)
EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. The lesions appeared near the end of the work shift and cleared within 3 to 4 hr after cessation of exposure. Other investigators have also reported that corneal edema caused by amine vapors is reversible. Distortion of vision is experienced at concn below those which produce eye or respiratory irritation. Another study reported that workers exposed at concn generally in the 3 to 4 ppm N-ethylmorpholine range, and never above 11 ppm, complained of drowsiness, optical halos, and foggy vision.|... An epidemic of neurogenic urinary retention from a company, employing 141 and 75 people at 2 different plants, manufacturing polyurethane foam products ... Abnormalities in vision, upper respiratory irritation, dermatitis, and pulmonary abnormalities also occurred but appeared to be related to the presence of other chemicals including N-ethylmorpholine and toluene diisocyanate.
