A stirred, cooled (-78[deg.] C.) solution of 4-benzyloxy-2-fluoro-benzonitrile (Compound 7, 18 g, 79 mmol) in dichloromethane (50 mL) was treated with a 1M solution of di-isobutyl aluminum hydride in hexanes (100 mL, 100 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature over 1 h. It was then quenched with aqueous dilute hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether (*2). The combined organic phase was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo to afford the title product as a white solid (16 g, 88percent).
