Use absorbent paper dampened with water to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned. STORAGE PRECAUTIONS: You should store this material at ambient temperatures and protect it from moisture and oxidizing agents. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. A bioassay for the possible carcinogenicity of 2-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride was conducted using Fischer 344 rats and B6C3F1 mice. 2-(Chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride was admin by gavage, at either of two dosages, to groups of 50 male and 50 female animals of each species, with the exception of 49 male rats in the high dose group. Twenty animals of each sex and species were placed on test as vehicle controls. The high and low dosages of 2-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride admin were, respectively, 150 and 75 mg/kg for rats and 250 and 125 mg/kg for mice. The cmpd was admin for 99 wk to rats and mice. The period of cmpd admin was followed by an observation period of 6 wk for rats and 5 wk for mice. ... Under the conditions of this bioassay, admin of 2-(chloromethyl)pyridine hydrochloride was not carcinogenic in Fischer 344 rats or B6C3F1 mice. PYRIDINE & ITS ALKYL DERIVATIVES ARE ABSORBED FROM GI TRACT, INTRAPERITONEAL CAVITY & LUNGS. PERITONEAL ABSORPTION IS APPARENTLY ONLY SLIGHTLY MORE RAPID & COMPLETE THAN GI ABSORPTION ... IN GENERAL THE BASES ARE RAPIDLY ABSORBED THROUGH INTACT SKIN. /ALKYL DERIVATIVES OF PYRIDINE/

SYMPTOMS: Symptoms of exposure to this compound may include severe irritation of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract; burning sensation; coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath; headache; nausea and vomiting. High concentrations are extremely destructive to tissues of the mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: This compound is harmful by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption. It is a severe irritant of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract; and high concentrations are extremely destructive to these tissues. When heated to decomposition it emits highly toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrogen chloride gas. (NTP, 1992)

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after washing the affected areas. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Corrosive chemicals will destroy the membranes of the mouth, throat, and esophagus and, in addition, have a high risk of being aspirated into the victim's lungs during vomiting which increases the medical problems. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Transport the victim IMMEDIATELY to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

The preparation method is to mix 2-methylpyridine and carbon tetrachloride, add anhydrous sodium carbonate, heat, and when the temperature reaches 58~60℃, start to ventilate chlorine under light irradiation, and keep the temperature at 60~65℃ , The end point of the reaction is controlled by gas chromatography, the product is obtained by desolventizing and then distilling to form a salt with hydrochloric acid.
