Zinc diethyldithiocarbamate is a dithiocarbamate salt that is the zinc salt of diethyldithiocarbamic acid. It is an accelerator and activator for natural rubber. It has a role as an antifungal agrochemical. It is a dithiocarbamate salt and a zinc molecular entity. It contains a diethyldithiocarbamate and a zinc(2+). It derives from a diethyldithiocarbamic acid.|Ditiocarb zinc, also known as Diethyldithiocarbamic acid zinc salt, is a known chelator for copper and zinc. It also a dermatological sensitizer and allergen. Sensitivity to ditiocarb zinc may be identified with a clinical patch test.|Zinc diethyldithiocarbamate is a Standardized Chemical Allergen. Zinc diethyldithiocarbamate is used as an accelerator in vulcanization of rubber. Dithiocarbamates are frequently present in domestic rubber goods such as gloves, clothing & contraceptive sheaths, that may cause urticaria.

Drug Information

Ditiocarb Zinc is approved for use within allergenic epicutaneous patch tests which are indicated for use as an aid in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in persons 6 years of age and older.

Substances that augment, stimulate, activate, potentiate, or modulate the immune response at either the cellular or humoral level. The classical agents (Freund's adjuvant, BCG, Corynebacterium parvum, et al.) contain bacterial antigens. Some are endogenous (e.g., histamine, interferon, transfer factor, tuftsin, interleukin-1). Their mode of action is either non-specific, resulting in increased immune responsiveness to a wide variety of antigens, or antigen-specific, i.e., affecting a restricted type of immune response to a narrow group of antigens. The therapeutic efficacy of many biological response modifiers is related to their antigen-specific immunoadjuvanticity. Many chelating agents function through the formation of COORDINATION COMPLEXES with METALS. Some of the ways they may act include preventing viral replication by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase; binding to specific cell-surface receptors and inhibiting viral penetration or uncoating; inhibiting viral protein synthesis; or blocking late stages of virus assembly. Carbon disulfide and its main metabolite 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid are metabolites common to almost all dithiocarbamates. A significant increase in urinary concentration of these compound has been observed for different conditions of exposure and for various dithiocarbamates.

The carbamates alone weakly activated estrogen- or progesterone-responsive reporter genes in breast and endometrial cancer cells. All of the carbamates decreased estradiol- or progesterone-induced reporter gene activity in the breast and endometrial cancer cells. In whole cell competition binding assays, the carbamates demonstrated a limited capacity to displace radiolabeled estrogen or progesterone from /estrogen receptor/ or /progesterone receptor/. /Carbamates/

Basic treatment: Establish a patent airway. Suction if necessary. Watch for signs of respiratory insufficiency and assist ventilation if necessary. Administer oxygen by nonrebreather mask at 10 to 15 L/min. Monitor for shock and treat if necessary ... . Anticipate seizures and treat if necessary ... . For eye contamination, flush eyes immediately with water. Irrigate each eye continuously with normal saline during transport ... . Do not use emetics. For ingestion, rinse mouth and administer 5 mL/kg up to 200 mL of water for dilution if the patient can swallow, has a strong gag reflex, and does not drool. Administer activated charcoal ... . /Dithiocarbamates and Related Compounds/|For eye contamination, flush eyes immediately with water. Irrigate each eye continuously with normal saline during transport ... . Advanced treatment: Consider orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation for airway control in the patient who is unconscious or in severe respiratory distress patient. Hyperventilate if signs of cerebral edema are present. Monitor cardiac rhythm and treat arrhythmias if necessary ... . Start an IV with D5W /SRP: "To keep open", minimal flow rate/. Use lactated Ringer's if signs of hypovolemia are present. Watch for signs of fluid overload. Treat seizures with diazepam ... . For hypotension with signs of hypovolemia, administer fluid cautiously. Consider vasopressors for hypotension with a normal fluid volume. Watch for signs of fluid overload ... . Use proparacaine hydrochloride to assist eye irrigation ... . /Dithiocarbamates and Related Compounds/|Persons who have absorbed any significant amount of thiocarbamates must avoid alcoholic beverages for at least three weeks. Disposition of thiocarbamates is slow, and their inhibitory effects on enzymes are slowly reversible. /Thiocarbamates/

/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Alcohol intolerance may result from exposure to dithiocarbamates. /Dithiocarbamates/|/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ Strong irritant to eyes and mucous membranes.|/CASE REPORTS/ In Nov 1981 a 19-yr-old woman began work as a kitchen employee. In June 1982 she developed urticaria on wrists every time she washed dishes at work, where she wore cotton & Formi-rubber latex domestic gloves. Whealing began on wrists a few minutes after she began washing, & occasionally she had edema of eyelids. Symptoms lasted 0.5 hr after removal of gloves. Itching was intense, causing excoriations on arms. There were no signs of eczema. She had no history of skin disease or atopy. Immediate reactions were not observed in patch tests. In scratch chamber tests, a small piece of rubber gloves & /zinc diethyldithiocarbamate/ ZDC produced a weal greater than histamine control at 15 min. Patient used different gloves at work when test began & no urticaria appeared. ZDC seemed to be sufficiently absorbed by contact to cause immunologic urticaria & edema of eyelids. Passive transfer did not occur.
