Trichlorofluoromethane appears as a clear light colored liquid. Nearly odorless. Denser than water. Poses low acute health hazard to humans. Primary hazard is to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit spread to the environment. Easily penetrates the soil to contaminate groundwater and nearby waterways.

Non-combustible at normal temperature; high heat produces toxic fluoride, chloride gas

In concentration of less than 20% (by volume in air), trichlorofluoromethane is odorless, in higher concentration, its odor is mild and somewhat ethereal.

Trichlorofluoromethane Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The liquid phase contact method of carbon tetrachloride and hydrogen fluoride is mainly used, and the methane fluorination method is used for production. The liquid phase contact method uses antimony pentachloride as a catalyst, and carbon tetrachloride reacts with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to form monofluorotrichloromethane and difluorodichloromethane, and by-product hydrochloric acid. The reaction product is free of hydrogen chloride, washed, dehydrated, degassed, and fractionated to obtain a finished product. Figure 76 is a process for preparing chloroform by carbon tetrachloride. The methane fluorochlorination method consists of methane, chlorine and hydrogen fluoride at 370-470°C and a pressure of 0.39-0.59 MPa for 4-10 seconds to obtain monofluorotrichloromethane and difluorodichloromethane. The mixture of monofluorotrichloromethane and difluorodichloromethane (the two components each account for 50%), the yield in terms of methane is more than 99%, and the purity of the separated products is more than 99.95%. Methane 132 Chlorine 2380 Hydrogen fluoride 260 Hydrochloric acid 1480

Uses

In refrigeration machinery requiring a refrigerant effective at negative pressures. As aerosol propellant.
