Description
With the molecular formula CCl₄, it has a symmetrical tetrahedral structure and appears as a colorless, dense liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. Its boiling point is relatively high (76.7°C), and its vapors are heavier than air. It is insoluble in water but miscible with most organic solvents. Due to its four symmetrically arranged chlorine atoms, it exhibits low chemical reactivity.

Carbon tetrachloride Use and Manufacturing
There are many production methods of carbon tetrachloride, including methane thermal chlorination method, carbon disulfide chlorination method, co-production of tetrachloroethylene method, phosgene catalytic method, methane oxychlorination method, high-pressure chlorine hydrolysis method, methanol hydrochlorination method. 1. Methane thermal chlorination method Methane and chlorine gas are mixed, and the thermal chlorination reaction occurs at 400-430°C to obtain crude products and by-product hydrochloric acid. The crude products are neutralized, dried and purified by distillation to obtain finished products. Raw material consumption quota: natural gas (containing 98% of methane) 210m3, liquid chlorine 2850kg/t. 2. Carbon disulfide method Chlorine gas and carbon disulfide react with iron as a catalyst at 90-100°C. The reaction products undergo fractional distillation, neutralization and rectification to obtain finished products. The method requires less investment and the product is easy to purify, but the cost is high and the equipment is seriously corroded. 3. The methane oxychlorination method has a high utilization rate of chlorine without pollution by hydrogen chloride and waste halogenated hydrocarbons. 4. High-pressure chlorine hydrolysis avoids the formation of tetrachloroethylene. 5. The product of methanol hydrochlorination method has good quality and high economic benefit. In addition, the production of methylene chloride and chloroform can co-produce chloroform.
As solvent for oils, fats, lacquers, varnishes, rubber waxes, resins; starting material in manufacture of organic Compounds.Pharmaceutic aid (solvent).Formerly used as dry cleaning agent, fire extinguisher and grain fumigant.
