Description

Dichlorodifluoromethane is a liquefied gas and exists as a liquid at room temperature when contained under its own vapor pressure, or as a gas when exposed to room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The liquid is practically odorless and colorless. The gas in high concentrations has a faint etherlike odor. Dichlorodifluoromethane is noncorrosive, nonirritating, and nonflammable. Ethereal odor at .20% by volume. Shipped as a compressed gas.

Dichlorodifluoromethane appears as a colorless gas having a faint ethereal odor. Shipped as a liquid confined under its own vapor pressure. Contact with the unconfined liquid can cause frostbite. Both components are noncombustible. Can asphyxiate by the displacement of air. Exposure of the closed container to prolonged heat or fire can cause it to rupture violently and rocket.

Methods of Manufacturing

It is prepared by reacting carbon tetrachloride and hydrogen fluoride in the presence of antimony pentachloride catalyst. This product is mainly obtained when the reflux condensation temperature is controlled to -5°C. Another production method is the direct method, which is synthesized directly from methane, chlorine, and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in a fluidized bed reactor.

Refrigerant, aerosol propellant.
