Dichlorodiphenylmethane Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Benzene is condensed with carbon tetrachloride (Fu-gram reaction). Add aluminum trichloride and 2/3 amount of anhydrous carbon tetrachloride to the reaction tank, cool to 10-15°C, add 1/12 amount of benzene for reaction, continue to cool to 5-10°C, and add the rest dropwise The mixed solution of carbon tetrachloride and benzene was added and reacted at 10℃ for 3h.

Uses

α,α-Dichlorodiphenylmethane is a degradation product of of polychloroaromatic insecticides such as Dicofol (D436700) and DDT. α,α-Dichlorodiphenylmethane is also used as a catalyst for photodegradation of plastics.
