Heptylamine Use and Manufacturing
Dissolve n-heptanal oxime (see 20965) in absolute ethanol, heat to boiling, add sodium bar, and maintain boiling reflux. After the sodium is dissolved, the reaction is cooled, diluted with water, and the reaction material is distilled to remove ethanol, water, and unreacted oxime from the distillate. The n-heptylamine hydrochloride in the residue is crystallized, and treated with alkali to obtain heptane. Amine, yield 60-73%.
Heptylamine is used in organic syntheses.
