ChEBI: Iron(III) citrate is an iron chelate resulting from the combination of iron(3+) and citrate(3-). It has a role as an anti-anaemic agent and a nutraceutical. It contains a citrate(3-) and an iron(3+).


When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

Ferric ammonium citrate is a yellowish brown to red solid with a faint odor of ammonia. It is soluble in water. The primary hazard is the threat to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit its spread to the environment. It is used in medicine, in making blueprints, and as a feed additive.

Methods of Manufacturing

The citric acid is added to the iron hydroxide solution, heated at a temperature lower than 60°C, evaporated to a slurry, coated on a glass plate and dried at low temperature to form small flakes, and then peeled off.

Uses

As a food additive, it is added to biscuits, milk powder and flour, as an iron nutrient fortifier, and also as a feed additive. Ferric citrate is also used as a medicine, and used as a photosensitive paper for blueprints.

Ferric Citrate is a nutrient supplement that is prepared from reac- tion of citric acid with ferric hydroxide. it is a compound of indefi- nite ratio of citric acid and iron. the ingredient may be used in infant formula. it is also termed iron (iii) citrate.
