Description

Ibotenic acid has agonist activity at both the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and trans-ACPD or metabolotropic quisqualate (Qm) receptor sites.

Ibotenic acid is a non-proteinogenic alpha-amino acid. It has a role as a neurotoxin.|A neurotoxic isoxazole (similar to KAINIC ACID and MUSCIMOL) found in AMANITA mushrooms. It causes motor depression, ataxia, and changes in mood, perceptions and feelings, and is a potent excitatory amino acid agonist.

(±)-Ibotenic acid Use and Manufacturing

Ibotenic acid is a neuroexcitatory amino acid originally isolated from Amanita species that functions as a NMDA and metabotropic glutamate receptor agonist. As a neurotoxin, ibotenic acid is often used to induce brain lesions in animals that model cognitive dysfunctions resulting from neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic brain injury, and stroke.
