Description

Tolperisone is a centrally acting muscle relaxant, is indicated for use in the treatment of pathologically increased tone of the cross-striated muscle caused by neurological diseases (damage of the pyramidal tract, multiple sclerosis, myelopathy, encephalomyelitis) and of spastic paralysis and other encephalopathies manifested with muscular dystonia.

Tolperisone hydrochloride is an aromatic ketone.|A centrally acting muscle relaxant that has been used for the symptomatic treatment of spasticity and muscle spasm. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1211)

Drug Information

A heterogeneous group of drugs used to produce muscle relaxation, excepting the neuromuscular blocking agents. They have their primary clinical and therapeutic uses in the treatment of muscle spasm and immobility associated with strains, sprains, and injuries of the back and, to a lesser degree, injuries to the neck. They have been used also for the treatment of a variety of clinical conditions that have in common only the presence of skeletal muscle hyperactivity, for example, the muscle spasms that can occur in MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS. (From Smith and Reynard, Textbook of Pharmacology, 1991, p358) (See all compounds classified as Muscle Relaxants, Central.)

Material

Drug Function and Efficacy

It has the effects of vasodilation and central muscle relaxation. It can directly dilate vascular smooth muscle and inhibit multi-synaptic reflexes to reduce skeletal muscle tension. It can relieve muscle rigidity and clonus caused by brain and spinal cord damage, and increase peripheral blood flow.

This ingredient has been used in drugs with the following functions (note: it does not mean that the ingredient itself has the following health functions)
