Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Dike fire-control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material. Excerpt from ERG Guide 153 [Substances - Toxic and/or Corrosive (Combustible)]: Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves. Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin. Dimethyloctadecylamine Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

It is made by condensation of octadecylamine, formaldehyde and formic acid. Add octadecylamine to the reactor first, stir evenly in the ethanol medium, add formic acid at a temperature control of 50-60 ℃, stir for a few minutes, add formaldehyde at 60-65 ℃, heat up to 80-83 ℃, keep it under reflux for 2h , Neutralize with liquid alkali, make the pH value greater than 10, stand still and separate layers, remove water, remove ethanol under reduced pressure distillation, and cool it to obtain N, N-dimethyloctadecylamine. Raw material consumption quota: octadecylamine (industrial product) 917kg/t, ethanol (95%) 417kg/t, formic acid 510kg/t, formaldehyde (37%) 546kg/t. In addition, there is a method of synthesizing directly from higher alcohols and dimethylamine. Using stearyl alcohol and dimethylamine in the presence of a catalyst, carry out catalytic amination in the liquid phase at 180-220°C, remove one molecule of water to obtain crude tertiary amine, and obtain high-purity N, N by distillation under reduced pressure -Dimethyl octadecylamine. Each ton of product consumes 971kg of stearyl alcohol and 170kg of dimethylamine.

Uses

Barlene(R) tertiary amines are used as chemical intermediates for the manufacture of quaternary ammonium compounds, amine oxide and betaine surfactants
