Methods of Manufacturing

68g of phenylurea and 120ml of 42% hydrazine hydrate are heated for 12h, the reaction mixture is decolorized by activated carbon and concentrated, cooled and crystallized to obtain 47-52g of crude product. The crude product is dissolved in absolute ethanol, and salt is formed with concentrated hydrochloric acid to obtain 46-48 g of 4-phenyl semicarbazide hydrochloride. The hydrochloride is dissolved in boiling water, and sodium hydroxide solution is added to precipitate the free alkali, which is filtered and dried to obtain 28-30 g of 4-phenyl semicarbazide.
