Description

CIVETONE is a colorless liquid with warm, sensual, animalic musky odor and extreme tenacity. It is themain odoriferous constituent of civet.Civetonewas formerly prepared bymultistep syntheses, for example. Recently, newer processes using dimethyl (Z)-9-octadecendioate as starting material have been described. This is cyclized by a Dieckmann condensation either in liquid or in gaseous phase. (Z)-9-Octadecendioic acid is available by microbial oxidation of oleic acid with Candida tropicalis.

Civetone Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The natural civet fragrance contains about 3.5% civetone. After alkalinizing the civet fragrance with 10% KOH alcohol liquid, the neutral part is fractionated in vacuum, and the 130-170℃ (0.2kPa) fraction is collected, made into semicarbazone, separated and refined, and then decomposed with oxalic acid to obtain the lynx ketone. The residue in the separation of civetone also contains civetol, which can be separated and basified with phthalate, and then oxidized with chromic acid to obtain civetone. Synthetic method: 9, 10, 16-trihydroxyhexadecanoic acid extracted from natural shellac as raw material, after halogenation, elimination, thionyl chloride, condensation with ethyl acetoacetate, decarboxylation, esterification, iodine It can be prepared by steps such as chemical, cyclization and hydrolysis; it can also be prepared from oleic acid or undecylenic acid.
