4-Methoxyphenol Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Using hydroquinone as the raw material, using dimethyl sulfate as the methylating agent, or using methanol as the methylating agent under high temperature and high pressure and catalysis, 4-methoxyphenol can be prepared. Another newer method is to react hydroquinone with methanol in the presence of p-benzoquinone. Mix methanol and concentrated sulfuric acid evenly, add hydroquinone, heat to reflux, dropwise add methanol solution of p-benzoquinone to react for 3h. Cool, neutralize with 40% sodium hydroxide solution, and filter out the sodium sulfate precipitate. The filtrate is recovered from methanol and extracted with ether. The extract is distilled to remove ether, and then distilled under reduced pressure to collect 110-112°C (0.53kPa) fractions to obtain the finished product. The yield was 76%.
