Cyclopentyl bromide Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Derived from cyclopentanol bromination: cyclopentanol and hydrobromic acid are mixed and heated to about 170°C and refluxed for 6-8h. Then steam distillation, the oil layer was washed with 5% sodium carbonate, then dried, filtered, fractionated, collected 136-139 ℃ fraction is the finished product. Another method is to react cyclopentanol with phosphorus tribromide: cool the cyclopentanol to 0°C, add freshly steamed phosphorus tribromide dropwise, add at 0-5°C, stir for 2h, and place at room temperature overnight. After adding water, the layers are separated, and the oil layer is steam distilled. The distillate was separated into layers, and the oil layer was washed with 10% sodium bicarbonate solution, dried with anhydrous calcium chloride, filtered, and the filtrate was distilled, and the fraction of 134-141°C was collected to obtain bromocyclopentane.

Uses

Bromocyclopentane, also known as Cyclopentyl Bromide, is an alkyl halide and a light yellow or colorless liquid at standard pressure and temperature. Bromocyclopentane is a precursor used in the preparation of cyclopentene and cyclopentanol. It is a fatty bromide, which is used as a solvent. It can be used an intermediate for the preparation of surfactant and pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds.
