Antiepileptic; increases levels of GABA in the brain

Drug Function and Efficacy

This product is an anti-epileptic drug that can increase the synthesis of GABA and reduce the degradation of GABA, thereby increasing the concentration of the inhibitory neurotransmitter g-aminobutyric acid (GABA), reducing the excitability of neurons and inhibiting seizures. In electrophysiological experiments, this product can produce an inhibitory effect on Na channels similar to that of phenytoin. It is harmful to the liver.

Indication	(1) Drinking alcohol can increase the sedative effect. (2) When general anesthetics or central nervous system depressants are used in combination with valproic acid, the clinical effect of the former may be more obvious. (3) When used in combination with anticoagulants such as warfarin or heparin, as well as thrombolytics, the risk of bleeding increases. (4) When used in combination with aspirin or dipyridamole, the bleeding time may be prolonged due to reduced platelet aggregation. (5) When used in combination with phenobarbital, the metabolism of the latter slows down and the blood drug concentration increases, thereby increasing the sedative effect and causing drowsiness.
