Niobium carbide (NbC) Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Niobium pentoxide reduction method In industry, niobium pentoxide and carbon black are usually used as raw materials to prepare niobium carbide: first, niobium pentoxide and carbon black are proportioned into a carbonized material, which is thoroughly mixed, and it is installed in a graphite crucible In the middle, use a high-frequency electric furnace to heat to 1600~1800℃ under hydrogen or vacuum conditions for the first carbonization, and then add carbon black to make it fully mixed, and then heat to 1800~1900℃ under hydrogen or vacuum. Carry out the second carbonization to obtain niobium carbide. The direct method uses metal niobium and carbon black as raw materials to prepare niobium carbide: the metal niobium powder and carbon black are mixed in proportion, after fully mixed, heated to 1600 ~ 1700 ℃ in vacuum or hydrogen to make it directly carbonized. Niobium carbide. The gas-phase reaction method uses niobium pentachloride vapor, hydrogen and methane as a raw material to prepare niobium carbide: the mixture of niobium pentachloride vapor and hydrogen is passed through an electrically heated tungsten wire with a temperature above 1000°C At this time, a metal niobium layer is formed on the surface of the tungsten wire, and then the electricity is continued to raise the temperature to 1300 ℃, and then the mixed gas of methane and hydrogen is introduced to carbonize the niobium into niobium carbide and deposit it on the surface of the hot tungsten wire, which is the product .

Uses

niobium carbide (NbC) is extremely hard refractory materials. TiC, ZrC, VC and NbC are commercially used in tool bits for cutting tools. HfC and NbC can also be used as refractory coatings in nuclear reactors. Niobium carbide (NbC) is used to make hard-tipped tools and special steels and to coat graphite in nuclear reactors. Cemented carbide tipped tools, special steels, preparation of niobium metal, coating graphite for nuclear reactors
