Description

Disulfur dichloride (S₂Cl₂), is a light amber to yellow-red, oily liquid with a pungent, irritating odor. It has a molecular weight of 135.04 g/mol, a melting point of approximately -80 °C, and a boiling point around 138 °C. The compound is denser than water, fuming upon exposure to air and decomposing upon contact with water to produce hydrogen chloride (HCl) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). It is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, benzene, ether, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride.

Sulfur monochloride Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

In the synthesis method, the sulfur powder is first put into the jacket reactor, and then heated by steam, and at the same time, a small amount of chlorine gas is introduced. After 1 hour of reaction, the heating is stopped, and the amount of chlorine is increased, and the reaction is maintained at 50-60°C for 16-20 hours. After filtering, it is distilled at 130-141°C, and the relative density of the feed liquid and the content of sulfur monochloride in the boiling range are qualified, and then the finished product of sulfur monochloride is prepared. The 2S+C12→S2C12 by-product recovery method carbon disulfide and chlorine gas are metered, mixed through a mixer and then enter the reactor to react at 95 ~ 100 ℃, the reacted materials enter the fractionation tower, and the top temperature of the tower is controlled at about 75 ℃. The temperature of the tower kettle is 120~130℃, and the reflux ratio is 1:1. Sulfur monochloride flows out of the tower kettle to the storage tank and is recovered as a by-product in the production process of carbon tetrachloride. Its CS2+3C12→CCl4+S2C12

Uses

Intermediate and chlorinating agent in the manufacture of organic chemicals, sulfur dyes, insecticides, synthetic rubbers; in cold vulcanization of rubber; as polymerization catalyst for vegetable oils; for hardening soft woods.
