Drug Function and Efficacy
Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole and acts as a specific inhibitor of the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (the proton pump) in gastric parietal cells. It reduces gastric acid secretion by targeting this pump, thereby inhibiting both basal and stimulated acid secretion. It is used to treat conditions related to excessive gastric acid such as GERD, erosive esophagitis, and peptic ulcers, and to eradicate Helicobacter pylori when combined with antibiotics.
