SECTION 12: Ecological information
12.1 Toxicity
- Toxicity to fish: LC50 - Danio rerio (previous name: Brachydanio rerio) - 3.8 mg/L - 96 h.
- Toxicity to daphnia and other aquatic invertebrates: EC50 - Daphnia magna - 1.6 mg/L - 48 h.
- Toxicity to algae: EC50 - Chlorella pyrenoidosa - 2.9 mg/L - 96 h.
- Toxicity to microorganisms: EC0 - activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage - 11 mg/L - 24 h.
12.2 Persistence and degradability
AEROBIC: In biodegradability tests using both a semistatic (revised OECD test) and dynamic system (sole carbon source, activated sludge), the half-life of 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene was determined to be greatly in excess of 4 weeks using both adapted and non-adapted inoculum(1). However, since bacteria capable of degrading unspecified chloronitrobenzene isomers have been isolated, these compounds are not expected to be inherently recalcitrant(2).
12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
A 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene BCF of 82 was determined for guppies (Poecilia reticulata) during 3 day exposure experiments(1). Rainbow trout, under continuous flow conditions and a water concentration of 770 ng/L, had a BCF value of 151 after 36 days exposure(2). According to a classification scheme(3), BCF values of 30 to 100 are moderate and 100 to 1000 are high.
12.4 Mobility in soil
The Koc of 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene is estimated as 1,100(SRC), using a log Kow of 3,05(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this estimated Koc value suggests that 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene is expected to have low mobility in soil.
12.5 Other adverse effects
no data available
SECTION 13: Disposal considerations
13.1 Disposal methods
Product
The material can be disposed of by removal to a licensed chemical destruction plant or by controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing. Do not contaminate water, foodstuffs, feed or seed by storage or disposal. Do not discharge to sewer systems.
Contaminated packaging
Containers can be triply rinsed (or equivalent) and offered for recycling or reconditioning. Alternatively, the packaging can be punctured to make it unusable for other purposes and then be disposed of in a sanitary landfill. Controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing is possible for combustible packaging materials.
