It’s also a go-to cleaner for good reason. Mixed with water, it forms a soft paste that scrubs sinks, stovetops, and mugs without scratching. It won’t strip paint or corrode surfaces like harsh chemicals might. And if you’ve ever sipped a teaspoon in water for heartburn, you’ve used its ability to temporarily calm stomach acid—though doctors warn against doing this often, since too much can upset your body’s salt balance.
Still, it’s not perfect for everything. Don’t use it on aluminum pans regularly—it can leave dark marks. And while it’s safe in food amounts, swallowing large doses can cause bloating, nausea, or worse. Like any substance, it’s about using the right amount for the right job.
So, to cut through the confusion: baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate—nothing added, nothing hidden. Its power comes from how that one molecule behaves under the right conditions.
