DSM launches new glass fiber filled PP material
Nutritional science and materials expert DSM has released a new glass-filled polypropylene material specifically for extrusion-type 3D printing.
The particle composite Arnilene AM6001 GF is designed for lightweight and mechanically demanding applications in automobiles, infrastructure, water management and even production tools.
Geoff Gardner, Director of Additive Manufacturing Innovation at DSM, said: "The Arnilene AM6001 GF, developed by our experts, provides industrial customers with an industry standard material with strong mechanical, thermal and chemical properties in the form of additive manufacturing. Through use They already have experienced materials, and they can fully focus on 3D printing and feel the benefits of 3D printing for the business."
Glass-filled polypropylene for 3D printing
Polypropylene is one of the most commonly used polymers in the world. It is known for its chemical resistance and fatigue properties, elasticity, toughness and high electrical resistivity. So thermoplastics are commonly used in chemical containers, heavy hinges and electronic components. By adding glass fiber as a reinforcing agent, DSM claims that it retains the ideal mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of the substrate-while optimizing the material for the 3D printing process.
Gardner added: "The availability of engineering-grade materials with the right set of properties is the next step in the additive manufacturing revolution."
During the development process, DSM's material scientists worked closely with equipment partners to ensure that composite materials can be printed using open source or closed 3D printers. According to reports, due to reduced energy consumption and lower life cycle assessment, these particles have a lower carbon footprint, making them a sustainable alternative to similar 3D printing materials.
DSM's additive manufacturing materials
The company already has a broad portfolio of 3D printing materials that can be used in various 3D printing technologies such as SLA, PBF and FFF. Earlier this year, DSM acquired part of the chemical company Clariant's additive manufacturing materials business, thereby further expanding its product range. According to the agreement, DSM will take over a series of mature engineering grade filament and granular materials, including some flame retardant and additive-enhanced composite materials.
DSM also recently collaborated with the engineering and consulting company JuggerBot 3D to further develop 3D printing technology for molten pellet manufacturing or pellet extrusion. The partners are currently developing new particle 3D printers and compatible materials that are mainly used in industrial production applications.
