Shashik Pharma's Ayurvedic Drugs Undergo Human Clinical Trials

Chemical Weekly 2018-06-01

Telangana-based Shashik Research Pharma has developed curative ayurvedic medicines for 11 major diseases and disorders, including thyroid and diabetes, which the company terms as a “breakthrough” in medicinal R&D.

“We are in the human trial phase right now and following its completion, we will officially launch all the products. The medicines, which were successfully tested on animals in 2017, are result-oriented products with the success rate of treatment of about 95%,” Ms. Shashikala Bandi, Director and Head R&D, Shashik Research, was quoted as saying in a Hindu Business Line news report.

In India, it is not mandatory for ayurveda medicines to undergo clinical trials. The company is conducting these trials, targeting global markets. The firm is readying for commercial production at its Koratla facility in Telangana and a global launch in a month’s time.

Shashik Research has received the government’s approval for the discove-ries, with the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) granting it licences to manufacture and sell these over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.

The products target thyroid treatment, kidney & gall bladder stones treatment, gynaecological disorders, pain, treatment of tumour, infertility, weight loss & cholesterol reduction, hypertension & diabetes, erectile dysfunction amongst others.

“These medicines have huge market potential as it addresses the contemporary and emerging concerns, while other companies’ drugs only manage these diseases and don’t cure,” she added.

Shashik Research had been conducting R&D on these products for the past 10 years. “We have been treating patients also as part of the research at our hospital,” Ms. Bandi, a gynaecologist, added.

It is also planning to start manufacturing the drugs – capsules, hair oil and an ointment (pain reliever) – at Koratla. The firm, which has already invested Rs. 10-crore for R&D, intends to invest another Rs. 20-30 crore for the commercial production of the drugs. It also plans to get regulatory approvals from countries such as the US and Canada, European countries such as Poland, Romania and Bulgaria, and West Asia.
