Akzo Nobel launches bisphenol-free inner coating for beverage can lids

ECHEMI 2023-05-26

Akzo Nobel has launched a new type of BPA-NI (Bisphenol A non-intent) * inner coating Accelshield 700 for beverage can lids, helping metal can factories and roll coating factories accelerate the transformation process without bisphenol.

Accelshield 700 does not actively add bisphenol A or bisphenol based epoxy resin during its production process, and complies with regulatory requirements of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union.

“The inner coating of the beverage can, including the beverage can cover, is crucial for blocking the contact between the food and beverage inside the can and the metal can, ensuring food safety while retaining its flavor. We are proud to further promote the transformation of the inner coating of beverage packaging without bisphenol, and we also look forward to the launch of this product in China next year.” Said Kaj van Alem, Director of Industrial Coatings Business for Akzo Nobel Asia.

Bisphenol is ubiquitous in today's manufacturing industry, and this situation urgently needs to be changed. Recently, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) proposed restrictions on the use of bisphenol A in metal packaging, leading to an increasing demand for bisphenol A free coatings in the market. The release of the Akzo Nobel Accelshield 700 comes at a timely time.

“With the increasing advancement of science and technology, bisphenol is no longer a necessary option for the safety coating of metal cans in the new era. As an important innovation, BPA-NI (Bisphenol A non-intent) coatings mark a critical turning point in the industry, and Accelshield 700 will also become a highly forward-looking and wise choice for metal packaging manufacturers,” Said Chris Bradford, Marketing Director of Akzo Nobel Industrial Coatings.

This new coating is mainly designed for food and liquids with strict storage requirements, including foods and beverages that are acidic or require high-temperature sterilization, such as yogurt, milk, coffee, soft drinks, and beer.

In practical applications, Accelshield 700 can be easily integrated into existing production processes to minimize the impact on metal packaging manufacturers' production lines.

Akzo Nobel prioritizes consumer safety and sustainability, launching responsible alternative coatings and striving to reduce their impact on the value chain, taking a big step towards the transition to a bisphenol free environment. At present, the company is working closely with customers to accelerate the market application of bisphenol substitutes.
