In biomedical research, sodium alginate gels are being used more and more as a model system for mammalian cell culture. These gels are easily adaptable to function as 3-D culture systems or 2-D systems that are more physiologically appropriate. Alginate gels are an excellent blank canvas on which to integrate extremely selective and quantitative mechanisms for cell adhesion since they lack alginate receptors on mammalian cell surfaces and have poor protein adsorption.
