Guar gum is extracted from the seeds of the guar bean tree, known as the Mabostagona cupus, and its main component is galactomannan. The guar tree is a hardy, drought-tolerant annual shrub that grows in the semi-early soils of western and south-western India and in some parts of Pakistan. India currently accounts for 80% of the world's annual production, Pakistan for 15% and other countries such as the USA and Indonesia for 5%. The tree grows best in sandy soils and it requires moderately intermittent rainfall and plenty of sunlight. It is sown each year after the first rainfall in July and harvested around the end of October of that year. The pods are harvested and dried in the sun. The pods are separated from the seeds by hand and the seeds are then sent to a factory for processing. The endosperm portion of the seeds is roasted, peeled, dried, cleaned, crushed, extracted with hot water, filtered to remove non-crystalline components such as hemicellulose and pectin, then treated with galactosidase, cooled and refined, concentrated under reduced pressure, dried and crushed, sieved and graded. Guar gum, as a natural green plant gum, is widely used in food, textile printing and dyeing, oil extraction, tobacco, construction materials, water treatment agents and many other fields.
