Pfizer's Strategic Shift in China's Pneumococcal Vaccine Market
In recent news, it has been reported that Pfizer, a leading pharmaceutical company, is dissolving its 400-member team responsible for the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in China, known as Prevenar 13. According to leaked screenshots of an internal communication, Pfizer has decided to expand its commercial partnership with Beijing Keyoceanmed Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (referred to as Beijing Keyocean) for the distribution and promotion of Prevenar 13 in mainland China. Pfizer will continue to be responsible for the development, production, and provision of necessary expertise for the product.
Background:
Prevenar 13, developed by Pfizer, is a PCV designed to prevent invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) caused by 13 different serotypes of pneumococcal bacteria. It was approved for market use in China in 2016 for infants and young children aged 6 weeks to 15 months. The vaccine is effective against diseases such as bacteremia, pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia caused by the targeted serotypes.
Pfizer's Strategic Partnership:
Prior to this development, Pfizer had signed a strategic agreement with Beijing Keyocean during the 5th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in 2022. This agreement aimed to strengthen cooperation in warehousing, distribution, and supply chain services for Prevenar 13 nationwide.
Reasons for the Strategic Shift:
The competitive landscape in the PCV market in China has undergone significant changes in recent years, primarily due to the rapid rise of domestic vaccine manufacturers such as Walvax Biotechnology. In December 2019, Walvax Biotechnology received approval for its own 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine, Walvaxin, breaking Pfizer's monopoly in the field. Another domestic vaccine, Vimenpax, developed and produced by Minhai Biological, was also approved for market use in 2021. This has resulted in a tripartite market situation for 13-valent pneumococcal vaccines in China.
Additionally, other local companies like Sinovac Biotech, Fosun Pharma, and Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products are either conducting research and development or have filed for regulatory approval for their own 13-valent pneumococcal vaccines. This increasing competition, coupled with the comparatively higher pricing of Pfizer's Prevenar 13 compared to Walvaxin and Vimenpax, may have prompted Pfizer's decision to transfer the sales rights to Beijing Keyocean and streamline operations to reduce costs and enhance efficiency.
Pfizer's Workforce Reduction:
The dissolution of the Prevenar 13 team in China is part of a larger trend of workforce reductions by Pfizer globally. Reports suggest that this is the seventh round of layoffs by the company in 2023. The previous layoffs occurred in Pfizer's research facility in Boulder, Colorado, the closure of KitCreek and Durham clinical manufacturing facilities in North Carolina, workforce reductions in New Jersey, layoffs at the COVID-19 drug and vaccine factory in Michigan, and workforce reductions in Ireland and the UK.
Pfizer's decision to dissolve its Prevenar 13 team in China and delegate sales rights to Beijing Keyocean reflects the changing competitive landscape in the domestic PCV market and the need to adapt to the increasing presence of domestic vaccine manufacturers. By focusing on strategic partnerships and optimizing operations, Pfizer aims to maintain its presence and competitiveness in the evolving Chinese vaccine market.
