Bioactives beneath the surface: Study explores fibre’s hidden benefits
New research from the University of Minnesota is uncovering the hidden potential of insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), commonly known as roughage, in promoting health beyond its conventional advantages. Published in Nutrients in September 2023, the study, co-authored by the University's department of food science and nutrition and Brightseed, a biotechnology company specializing in healthy bioactive ingredients, sheds light on the diverse bioactives found in IDF.
While IDF has long been recognized for promoting stool bulk and regular bowel movements, this study reveals a deeper layer of benefits associated with unique bioactives. The researchers, exploring 30 sources of IDF ranging from rice to stinging nettle, identified 64 bioactive compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, tannins, tocopherols, vitamin C, carotenoids, and more. Notable bioactives such as quercetin, resveratrol, catechins, and lutein were found, showcasing the rich diversity within IDF sources.
Lead author Madeline Timm emphasized the need to recognize the valuable components of fiber-containing plant sources, stating, "Fiber is the marker of health included in our dietary guidelines, but our research indicates that we need to ensure the other valuable components of fiber-containing plant sources—the bioactives—are also recognized as providing valuable benefits for human health."
Enhancing Nutritional Value through Fortification
The study suggests fortifying processed foods with bioactives from IDF sources to increase their nutritional value. Jan-Willem van Klinken, co-author and senior vice president of medical, scientific, and regulatory affairs for Brightseed, sees potential in offering widely accessible fiber-fortified products that enhance bioactive content without compromising consumer appeal. The research indicates that even low levels of fortification do not impact consumer acceptability, opening avenues for the food industry to enhance nutritional profiles without sacrificing taste.
Navigating Consumer Preferences
While fortification holds promise, the study acknowledges the importance of consumer acceptance. Consumer preferences play a crucial role in the success of bioactive-enriched products. The findings suggest that consumers are attracted to products with added health benefits, presenting an opportunity for the food industry to meet demands for functional foods without compromising taste or appeal.
Addressing the Global Fiber Gap
Despite the promising implications, the study recognizes global challenges in fiber intake, with only a small proportion of the population meeting recommended dietary fiber intake. Collaborative efforts between industry, academia, and government are urged to elevate awareness about bioactives and bridge the gap between dietary fiber recommendations and actual intake.
The study envisions a potential paradigm shift in how the food and health industries, along with consumers, perceive IDF and bioactives. As dietary guidelines increasingly promote plant-based and IDF-rich diets, this research could reshape perspectives on fiber intake, contributing to a more comprehensive approach to health and wellbeing in the era of functional foods and wellness trends.
