The World's Largest Proton Exchange Membrane Catalyst Factory! Umicore Deploys Fuel Cell Projects in China
On December 3, 2023, Umicore, a recycling materials technology company headquartered in Belgium, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new large-scale fuel cell catalyst factory in Changshu, Jiangsu Province.
Umicore said it will build the world's largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) catalyst production facility in China to date, which can meet customer order needs in the next seven years.
Joakim Thøgersen, Senior Vice President of Fuel Cell and Automotive Industry, said that China has become an important engine for the development of global automotive fuel cell technology and market. Through cutting-edge fuel cell catalyst technology, Umicore is reshaping the new pattern of transportation in China and around the world.
Umicore said the new facility will expand the company's existing fuel cell catalyst production and R&D footprint in Europe and Asia, helping to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce scope 3 carbon emissions in the value chain. The plant is expected to be operational in early 2026.
