Dutch chemical company AkzoNobel supplies bio-based coatings to KIA Motors. KIA Motors will use the coating on the interior of its new EV9 electric SUV, marking the first time the automaker has specified an interior bio-based coating.

The product is made from two biorosins, one extracted from rapeseed and the other from rosin. This paint will be used on the interior door switch panel of EV9. In addition, AkzoNobel also provides coatings for the rest of the model's interior.

Patrick Bourguignon, director of AkzoNobe's automotive and specialty coatings business, said: "Both companies have a long history of developing more sustainable products, and the company is pleased to play a role in helping KIA Motors achieve this exceptional production milestone."

In addition to being 100% color master certified, the bio-based paint used on the EV9 meets all KIA Motors requirements for chemical and physical resistance, such as resistance to sunscreen, air fresheners, heat and scratches.

Bourguignon said: “KIA Motors’ requirements for EV9 coatings are very specific and our bio-based product has the properties to meet all their needs. This is the latest example of the company’s continued development of advanced coating technologies. These technologies can substantially reduce environmental impact without compromising quality. "

AkzoNobe has been an excellent partner of KIA Motors for nearly ten years. It is reported that this new agreement is currently limited to the EV9 model produced in South Korea, and is expected to be extended to other EV models that KIA Motors will launch soon.
