Is the EU Banning the Herbicide S-Metolachlor in 2024?

ECHEMI 2024-01-09

In a recent development, the European Commission has issued Regulation (EU) 2024/20, announcing the discontinuation of the approval for the active substance S-metolachlor. According to the conditions outlined in the regulation's annex, the relevant entries for S-metolachlor in Part A of Regulation (EU) No 540/2011 are to be removed. Member states are required to revoke the authorization for plant protection products containing S-metolachlor by April 23, 2024, with a grace period not exceeding July 23, 2024, as provided by Article 46 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009. The regulation will come into effect on the twentieth day following its publication.

EU's decision to ban S-metolachlor raises questions about the future of this herbicide and its impact on agricultural practices.
