Is a Widely Used Herbicide Facing a Ban in the EU?

On January 3, 2024, the European Commission issued Regulation (EU) 2024/20, which discontinues the approval of the active substance S-metolachlor.


According to the conditions specified in the annex, the relevant entries for S-metolachlor in Part A of Regulation (EU) No 540/2011 will be removed. Member states are required to revoke the authorization for plant protection products containing S-metolachlor by April 23, 2024, with a grace period granted until July 23, 2024, as provided by Article 46 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009. This regulation will take effect on the twentieth day following its publication.
