EU Assesses Safety of Isomaltulose Syrup as a Novel Food
In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has conducted an evaluation of isomaltulose syrup as a potential new food product. On January 22, 2024, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods, and Food Allergens (NDA) released its scientific opinion on the safety of isomaltulose syrup (dried) as a novel food. Isomaltulose syrup is a mixture of mono- and disaccharides, primarily composed of isomaltulose (≥75%) and trehalulose (<13%). The applicant intends to use this syrup as a substitute for sucrose in the market.
The EFSA evaluation concluded that isomaltulose syrup (dried) is as safe as sucrose. The safety assessment was based on available literature data on isomaltulose and mixtures of isomaltulose and trehalulose since no specific absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) or toxicological data were provided for the novel food. Considering the nature, composition, and production process of the syrup, the panel determined that the safety data were sufficient to establish its safety equivalence to sucrose.
