Recently, BeiGene announced its fourth-quarter and full-year financial results for 2023, revealing a staggering total revenue of $2.5 billion, marking a remarkable 74% year-on-year growth and reaching an all-time high. Among the company's flagship products, the BTK inhibitor, BTKzy (Zanubrutinib), emerged as a standout performer with global sales of $1.3 billion, making it the first Chinese molecule to surpass the billion-dollar milestone. Wang Xiaodong, as the founder, epitomizes the concept of a rags-to-riches story. Born into humble beginnings, he pursued his education at Beijing Normal University, later studying abroad and eventually venturing into entrepreneurship at the age of 40.

In an era characterized by a scarcity of innovative drugs in China, Wang Xiaodong made the bold decision to return to his homeland and lead BeiGene in a relentless nine-year battle to develop the first Chinese anti-cancer drug, Zanubrutinib, which successfully broke the barrier of Chinese cancer drugs being limited to the domestic market. BeiGene also became the first biotech company to achieve listings in China, the United States, and Hong Kong, solidifying its position as a global powerhouse in innovation with a market capitalization of over $100 billion.

When asked about his initial motivation to return to China and pursue research, Wang Xiaodong humorously replied, "Too young, too simple, sometimes naïve." With grand aspirations and an arduous journey ahead, Wang Xiaodong's dream of developing a leading global anti-cancer drug began to take shape. His childhood was marked by adversity, with the loss of his mother to cancer at the age of 11. However, this tragedy served as a catalyst for his determination to make a difference in the field of oncology. Despite facing financial hardships, Wang Xiaodong excelled academically and secured a place at Beijing Normal University, where his passion for biology flourished.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Wang Xiaodong made the decision to pursue further education in the United States, earning a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Subsequently, he embarked on a postdoctoral research stint at Emory University under the guidance of Nobel laureates Joseph Goldstein and Michael Brown. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of apoptosis, Wang Xiaodong received the Molecular Biology Award from the National Academy of Sciences in 2004 and was elected as a member of the prestigious institution.

In 2003, Wang Xiaodong returned to China and assumed the position of Co-director of the Beijing Institute of Life Sciences, eventually becoming its sole director. It was during his time at the institute that he became inspired to pursue entrepreneurship and develop innovative cancer drugs to fulfill his long-cherished dream. It was at a chance reunion with his American friend, Ouyang Lei, that the seeds of their partnership were sown. Ouyang Lei, a Stanford University graduate and experienced entrepreneur, shared Wang Xiaodong's vision and the two decided to embark on their entrepreneurial journey together.

In December 2010, Wang Xiaodong and Ouyang Lei established BeiGene, with its headquarters located in Changping, Beijing. Their decision to operate in China was motivated by the enormous potential they saw in the country's pharmaceutical market. Wang Xiaodong's extensive knowledge and Ouyang Lei's expertise in the biotech industry proved to be a winning combination, propelling BeiGene to become a transformative force in China's pharmaceutical landscape.
