The Ordinary launches new retinoid innovation for advanced users

ECHEMI 2024-03-11

The Ordinary has expanded its retinoid range to serve consumers looking for advanced alternatives. Retinal 0.2% Lotion is the skincare brand's latest innovation, designed to improve fine lines, skin tone, texture and radiance after two weeks. According to an independent study, the appearance of frown lines and crow's feet is said to be significantly reduced after six weeks.

Retinal, also known as retinaldehyde, is a form of vitamin A that converts into retinoic acid in one step, whereas retinol takes two steps to eventually provide the skin benefits. Therefore, when applied to the skin, the retina can deliver the desired molecules more efficiently. What's unique about The Ordinary is that the lotion uses encapsulated retinaldehyde, where retinal molecules are surrounded by hydroxyapatite particles.

Prudvi Kaka, chief scientific officer at The Ordinary to Cosmetics Business, explained: "The 0.2% concentration of this formula is considered unusual and is on the higher end of the retinal concentration levels currently on the market. Due to its high concentration of retinaldehyde, this formula can deliver significant benefits when used just twice a week."

"This new formula also contains a synthetic oat analogue to help address skin discomfort and dryness, a common problem associated with the use of retinoid products."

"Our new formula is perfect for those who have experience with retinoids; for those who are new to using retinoids, we recommend our Squalane range of retinols. These formulations are available in concentrations of 0.2%, 0.5% and 1%."

"Our beginner-friendly option is 0.2%. Then, you can slowly work your way up to our 1% option, depending on your skin's tolerance." Kaka added that this latest launch reflects The Ordinary's 2024 NPD strategy.

"We want to reaffirm our commitment to the democratization of ingredients and the commercialization of minimally formulated active technologies," the cosmetic scientist said. "Last year we launched Soothing Barrier Support Serum, a new take on multi-active formulas that we hope to continue to explore, but we remain very committed to our original mission."
