Argentina announced lower import tariffs on Atrazine, Glyphosate and 2,4-D
Recently, the Argentine government announced that it will significantly reduce import duties on herbicides, including Atrazine, Glyphosate and 2,4-D, aiming to reduce the economic burden on the agricultural sector and boost agricultural production.
According to the government's official announcement, the new import tariff will be reduced from the original 35 percent to 12.6 percent, and the tariff on Atrazine will be specifically reduced from 24 percent to 10.8 percent. This adjustment is intended to align with MERCOSUR's common tariff standards in order to promote trade harmony within the region.
Although the government's move was intended to stimulate the current wheat industry and in response to demonstrations by the Argentine Rural Association and the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, reaction to the news within the agrochemical industry was divided. Some in the agrochemical industry are skeptical and are waiting for the official release of the decree to more accurately assess its potential impact.
In addition, many distributors, manufacturers and local producers felt that lowering import duties would have a limited impact and could lead to unfair competition with domestic production; The Argentine Chamber of Fertilizer and Agrochemical Industries (CIAFA) said the measure could have a negative impact on synthetic and formulation plants in the country. The Northern Producers' Association (Apronor) said the measure was actually better for state revenue, but the tax cut was a drop in the bucket compared to the government's nationwide fiscal collection.
At present, the stakeholders in the herbicide sales chain generally believe that the direct impact of the import duty reduction on the current season is limited because the product is already on the market this season. It is expected that the effect of this policy will gradually show in the following quarters
