EU Evaluates Renewal Application for Genetically Modified Maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603
In a recent development, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has conducted an evaluation of the renewal application for the authorization of genetically modified maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603 in the European Union (EU). This evaluation was carried out by the GMO Panel, a group of experts specializing in genetically modified organisms. The findings of this assessment have important implications for the future cultivation and use of this genetically modified maize.
On April 26, 2024, the EFSA announced that it had assessed the renewal application for genetically modified maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603. The application, submitted by Corteva Agriscience Belgium BV and Bayer Agriculture BV, sought the renewal of authorization for the herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant traits of this genetically modified maize for its use in food and feed, excluding cultivation within the EU.
During the evaluation process, the GMO Panel thoroughly examined the data provided in the renewal application, including post-market environmental monitoring reports, literature reviews, updated bioinformatic analyses, and additional documents or studies. The purpose was to identify any potential new risks, modified exposure levels, or scientific uncertainties associated with the genetically modified maize.
After careful analysis, the GMO Panel concluded that there was no evidence in the renewal dossier to suggest the presence of new hazards, changes in exposure levels, or scientific uncertainties that would alter the original risk assessment conducted on maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603. The assessment assumed that the DNA sequences of the events in the genetically modified maize considered for renewal were identical to those assessed in the original application.
The evaluation conducted by the EFSA's GMO Panel has determined that there are no new risks or uncertainties associated with the renewal application for genetically modified maize MON 89034 × 1507 × NK603. This evaluation provides valuable information for policymakers and stakeholders involved in the regulation and assessment of genetically modified organisms in the EU. The findings contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding the use of genetically modified crops and their potential impact on food and feed safety.
