Peru's Tuna Production Exceeds 1 Million Tons, Surpassing 40% Quota Completion
Peru's fishing season for tuna in the northern region has been progressing smoothly, with the latest reports from the Ministry of Production revealing that the tuna catch has exceeded 1 million tons. This significant achievement represents more than 40% of the allocated quota, highlighting the country's robust tuna industry.
Peru, renowned for its abundant marine resources, has witnessed a successful fishing season for tuna in its northern region. According to the Ministry of Production's recent report, the current tuna catch has surpassed an impressive milestone, reaching over 1 million tons.
Sergio Gonzalez, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Production, announced that as of May 6th, the first tuna fishing season has yielded more than 1 million tons, accounting for 42.34% of the allocated quota of 2.475 million tons. The tuna industry's contribution to the overall fisheries production value stands at 13.1%, equivalent to an added value of approximately 219 million Peruvian soles (58.8 million US dollars).
The fishing season for tuna in the northern region commenced on April 16th, and the production of fishmeal and fish oil, derived from tuna, accounts for 18.9% of Peru's fisheries exports, generating an impressive foreign exchange income of 564 million US dollars.
Gonzalez further highlighted that the ports of Malabrigo, Chimbote, Callao, Coishco, and Chanay have recorded the highest tuna catches. During the initial 21 days of the fishing season, the average daily catch was 49,906 tons. The fishing operations have been progressing smoothly, with the aim to fully meet the allocated quota and provide additional revenue for the country and the fisheries sector.
Notably, the tuna fishing industry in Peru has created approximately 11,800 direct employment opportunities and 36,200 indirect jobs along the entire industry chain, emphasizing its significant role in supporting the local economy.

The successful fishing season in the northern region highlights Peru's robust tuna industry, which contributes significantly to the country's fisheries production and economic growth.
