Australia Implements Updated Standards for Malathion and Implements 2-Year Transition Period
In a move to enhance safety and regulatory control, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has announced updated standards and increased restrictions on the use of Malathion, a widely used organic phosphorus insecticide.
Malathion, known for its effectiveness in contact, stomach, and fumigation control, has been extensively used in Australian agriculture, horticulture, and vegetable cultivation since its approval by the APVMA.
The recent decision by the APVMA involves key changes to the approval of the active ingredient, product registration, and associated labeling of Malathion. These changes aim to align with ISO 1750:1981 standards and enhance safety measures. The major revisions include:
1. Changing the active ingredient name from "maldison" to "malathion," in accordance with the name specified in ISO 1750:1981.
2. Prohibiting direct application to water and discontinuing its use for controlling mosquito larvae due to potential risks to aquatic organisms.
3. Updating usage instructions, including usage limitations, spray drift buffer zones, withholding periods, safety instructions, and storage conditions.
4. Requiring all Malathion-containing products to have a specified shelf life and indicating the corresponding expiration date on the label.
To facilitate a smooth transition, the APVMA has granted a two-year phase-out period. During this period, Malathion products with the old labels may still be circulated, but after the expiration of the transition period, only products with the new labels will be permitted for use.
The updated standards and restrictions on Malathion reflect Australia's commitment to ensuring the safety and efficacy of agricultural and veterinary chemicals. By aligning with international naming conventions and implementing stricter usage guidelines, the APVMA aims to mitigate potential risks and safeguard the environment and public health.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has taken decisive steps to update the standards and reinforce the restrictions on the use of Malathion, an organic phosphorus insecticide. The revisions include changes in the active ingredient name, usage instructions, and labeling requirements. By implementing these measures and allowing for a two-year transition period, Australia aims to ensure the responsible use of Malathion and maintain high standards of safety and environmental protection in the agricultural sector.
