Unlocking Vietnam's Halal Market Potential
In the rapidly evolving global food landscape, the Halal market presents a compelling opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises. According to trade experts, the Halal food market is witnessing rapid growth worldwide, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming years. A report by the Pew Research Center indicates that the global Muslim population is projected to reach 2.2 billion by 2030, driving an ever-increasing demand for Halal products.
Compared to other regional counterparts, Vietnam's Halal food industry enjoys several favorable conditions. Its strategic geographical location, coupled with its strengths in agriculture, food processing, tourism, and services, position the country as a viable player in the global Halal market. Moreover, Vietnam's deep integration into the international community and participation in key regional economic cooperation mechanisms, including new-generation free trade agreements, further bolster its potential.
The Vietnamese government has placed a particular emphasis on supporting enterprises in effectively tapping into the global Halal food market. However, the Halal food industry is subject to stringent regulations, requiring not only quality and food safety assurance but also adherence to the Quran and Sharia law. This has presented numerous challenges for Vietnamese companies seeking to export their products to Islamic nations.
Currently, Vietnamese enterprises are in the nascent stage of entering the Halal food market. Approximately 50 companies per year obtain Halal certification, with their product portfolios ranging from seafood, beverages, and canned goods to confectionery, vegetarian items, and pharmaceuticals.
The representative of the Vietnam Trade Office in Indonesia highlighted the vast potential for Vietnamese enterprises to explore the Indonesian market, as the country boasts a Muslim population of 87%. Vietnam's National Halal Company manager, Tran Van Xuan, further emphasized the country's advantageous geographical location and abundant, cost-effective raw materials, leading to a growing number of Vietnamese businesses interested in venturing into the Halal food industry.
Developing the Halal food sector not only presents opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises in Halal-related areas such as tourism, aviation, restaurants, and logistics but also poses significant challenges. The lack of a unified global Halal standard and the absence of proper Harmonized System (HS) codes for Halal products create obstacles for export activities. Moreover, many Islamic countries mandate Halal certification as a mandatory requirement, further complicating the landscape.
In response to these challenges, Vietnamese enterprises are increasingly focused on optimizing production processes and elevating product quality to secure Halal certification. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is also working to create a favorable legal framework by strengthening international cooperation, negotiating and signing trade agreements, and facilitating connections between Vietnamese organizations and authorities, as well as distribution systems in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates.
To drive the growth of Vietnam's Halal food industry, relevant authorities must actively promote the distribution of Halal-certified Vietnamese products, simultaneously expanding the scale of Halal food production and exports to meet the demands of the expanding global market.
