EU Approves Lacto-N-Neotetraose I and 2'-Fucosyllactose Mixture Produced by Escherichia coli K-12 DH1 Derivative Strain as Novel Food
The European Commission has taken an important step forward in pushing the frontiers of food technology. In accordance with Regulation (EU) 2024/2090 of 30 July 2024, published in the Official Journal of the European Union, A mixture of Lacto-N-Neotetraose I and 2'-Fucosyllactose(LNFP-I/2'-FL), produced from a strain derived from E. coli W (ATCC 9637), was approved as a novel food, allowing it to be marketed in Europe. This decision is based on the guiding principles of Regulation (EC) No 2015/2283 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which aims to ensure the safety and innovation of novel food products, while amending the annex to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU)2017/2470 to adapt to the new regulatory requirements. The new regulations will be fully implemented within 20 days of publication, bringing new standards and opportunities to the food industry.
The approval of the LNFP-I/2'-FL mixture resulted from intensive research and utilization of E. coli K-12 DH1-derived strains to produce this novel food ingredient through fermentation technology. The introduction of this mixture not only provides consumers with more diverse food choices, but is also expected to serve as a new source of raw materials in products such as infant formula to meet the market demand for healthier and more nutritious foods. For the infant food industry in particular, this could open up a whole new direction of research and development, as LNFP-I/2'-FL is considered to have potential prebiotic properties that may help improve gut health and promote growth and development in infants and young children.
This innovation also reflects the EU's continued commitment to food safety and innovation policy. Regulation (EC) No 2015/2283 aims to ensure the safety of novel foods while encouraging scientific progress and market innovation. Through a rigorous scientific assessment and approval process, the EU has ensured that the use of this novel food ingredient does not pose a risk to consumer health.
With the new regulations coming into force, food manufacturers will have the opportunity to develop products containing LNFP-I/2'-FL blends to meet consumers' quest for healthier, more natural foods.
