The largest anode factory opened by China outside the country, the BTR Indonesia factory, officially started production
The new lithium-ion battery anode material factory of BTR New Materials Group, a global leader in battery materials, in Indonesia has officially started production. This milestone marks the 24th anniversary of BTR's establishment, and the group has established the largest anode production base outside China.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Labor Ida Fauziah, Minister of Investment Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif, BTR Chairman He Xueqin, BTR Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Huang Youyuan and others attended the unveiling ceremony.
The first phase of the project will invest US$478 million and produce 80,000 tons of negative electrode materials annually. The second phase is scheduled to start at the end of 2024, with an additional investment of US$299 million, and the total production capacity will be expanded to 160,000 tons.
BTR has been the world's largest anode material market for 14 consecutive years, serving major lithium-ion battery manufacturers such as Panasonic, Samsung SDI, LGES, SKOn, CALT and BYD. Its product portfolio includes natural and artificial graphite, silicon-based materials and high-nickel ternary cathode materials.
The Indonesian plant will provide a variety of anode materials for electric vehicles, consumer batteries and energy storage systems. In response to the continuous expansion of the global new energy market, BTR has established cathode and anode material factories in Indonesia and Morocco. The construction of the Indonesian plant is the first overseas expansion of China's anode material industry and an important part of BTR's global growth strategy.
During the first phase of construction, BTR employed 4,000 local workers. The project took only 10 months to complete and will create 1,200 additional jobs after it goes into production. The new plant solves the critical gap in the supply of lithium-ion battery anode materials in Indonesia and the ASEAN region, strengthens Indonesia's new energy industry and upgrades Indonesia's industrial infrastructure.
