Covestro and Carlisle Join Forces to Bring Biocircularity to the Construction Sector, Reducing CO2 Emissions by 2.4kg of MDI

ECHEMI 2024-08-19

In the United States, buildings and their environments consume nearly 40% of the energy. Architects, builders, and owners all understand that energy efficiency is a core element in building a sustainable future. Therefore, Covestro and Carlisle Building Materials are teaming up to bring biocircular products to the construction industry.

Covestro will provide Carlisle with quality-balanced biocircular feedstock based on ISCC PLUS certification - methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), with a carbon footprint 99% lower than traditional fossil-based MDI. Specifically, for every kilogram of MDI produced, 2.4 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions are reduced, which will result in lower carbon content for Carlisle's high-performance polyisocyanurate panels.

Covestro's partnership with Carlisle continues the company's long-standing tradition of joint innovation in the construction industry. As the importance of sustainability targets for the building environment continues to grow, the two companies are ready to collaborate on the development and launch of a new generation of insulation materials.

Hermann-Josef Doerholt, global head of Covestro's High Performance Materials division, said, "Covestro is committed to achieving a fully circular vision, which requires breakthroughs in research and development that will directly support our customers' (such as Carlisle) "BASF has set the most ambitious sustainability and climate targets in the chemical industry, and the more solutions we develop, the greater the positive impact will be throughout the supply chain."

BASF will supply Mondur CQ 489 MS isocyanate to Carlisle. CQ, short for "Circular Intelligence," represents a broad range of BASF's circular products, in which at least 25% of the alternative raw materials come from biomass or recycled plastic.

As a global leader in building envelope solutions, Carlisle Building Materials is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Carlisle will produce bio-based rigid foam insulation materials for its SynTec, Versico, Hunter Panels, and WeatherBond brands, containing 5% bio-circular content. This innovative bio-based insulation material is the latest addition to Carlisle Building Materials' sustainable building product portfolio.

Carlisle Building Materials President Steve Schwar said, "Carlisle Building Materials is always at the forefront of developing high-performance building products that are sustainability-leading." "With our new bio-based rigid foam insulation materials, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility while ensuring that our customers have access to the most advanced building materials." Our partners have played a critical role in enabling our bio-isolation, Steve added. "We not only drive advancements in materials science together, but also support the construction industry towards a more sustainable future."

Julia Rubino, North America sales director for high-performance materials at Covestro, said: "At Covestro, we are well aware of the outstanding performance of polyurethane insulation materials. Being able to provide innovative bio-circular raw material solutions to long-term partners and industry leaders like Carlisle proves that we can adopt forward-looking, sustainable solutions today."

Covestro has ISCC PLUS-certified factories in every major market globally, including its manufacturing facility in Baytown, Texas. To support its fully circular vision, Covestro's goal is to achieve climate neutrality (scopes 1 and 2) by 2035 and climate neutrality (scope 3) by 2050. Currently, the company has hundreds of circular CQ products and is continuously expanding its product line.
