Food Standards Australia New Zealand May Approve Highly Toxic Solvent, 2-Methyloxolane May Become a New Threat to Food Safety
On 26 August 2024, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) issued Notice No. 302-24 relating to application No. A1260, which seeks public comment on the use of 2-methyloxolane as an extraction solvent processing aid.
2-Methyloxolane (2-Methyloxolane), as a class of cyclic ether compounds, its chemical formula C5H10O, has colorless and volatile physical properties, widely used in the production process of many industrial chemicals and solvents. The compound plays an important role in the field of chemical reagents and solvents, and is not only used in the synthesis of other chemicals, but also widely used in industrial processes such as cleaning and degreasing. At the same time, 2-methyloxy-heterocyclopentane, as a polymer monomer, plays an indispensable role in the production of polyimide, polyester and other polymer materials. In the field of fuel additives, the compound can significantly increase the octane or cetane number of the fuel, thereby optimizing the fuel performance. In addition, through further synthetic conversion, 2-methyloxy-heterocyclopentane can also be used as a food flavor or pharmaceutical intermediate to prepare compounds with specific functions. Due to its excellent performance in solvability and chemical reactivity, 2-methyloxy-heterocyclopentane has shown great application potential in many industrial fields. However, we also need to be highly vigilant about the environmental and safety risks it may bring, and we must take strict measures to ensure safety and compliance during production, storage and use.
According to the notice, the deadline for public comments is set for 6pm (Canberra time) on September 20, 2024.
